Search Engines Submissions

Free submissions are accepted by Alta Vista, Yahoo, Google, America Online, Netscape, Hotbot, Lycos and MSN. Free submissions are not guaranteed by the free engines, and results take up to eight weeks to appear. Pay-per-click keyword marketing allows competitors to vie for top spots in major search engines, including Yahoo, Alta Vista, MSN, Google, AOL and Lycos. You pay only on click-throughs to your site.

Google finished January 2006 with 48 percent of the U.S. search market, trailed by Yahoo at 22 percent and MSN at 11 percent, according to Nielsen/Net Ratings.

According to a March/April 2004 analysis of search engine market share by Onestat.com, the seven largest search engines on the web are:

The First Step - Optimize & Free Submit

After we evaluate your Web site for its search engine readiness and make needed changes to the content and/or metatags (search engine optimization), we will manually submit your site to the top free search engines and directories. Manual submissions are preferred and automated submissions are often banned (which is why we don't automate). We will provide a search engine report approximately eight weeks later to measure results. This allows enough time for the search engines and directories to process requests, update their databases and display new listings.

Free Engines & Directories

The following major search engines and directories offer free basic submissions: Alta Vista, Yahoo, Google, MSN and DMOZ (the Open Directory Project, which provides listings to America Online, Netscape, HotBot, and Lycos). Submissions to free engines and directories take two to eight weeks to appear online if they are accepted. Free search engines and directories do not guarantee acceptance or rank, but an optimized home page will improve your results.

We cannot guarantee rank or placement in any of the free engines or directories; however, we will do everything possible to increase your chances. Several of our clients enjoy fantastic rankings due to our work. Read our search engine success stories for more details. For faster, guaranteed results, consider the "Rapid Inclusion" and pay-per-click marketing described further below.

Once desired free listings are achieved, we suggest regular monitoring and site updates to maintain your positions! Your home page should be kept fresh with regular updates, even if it's just a sentence or two, so that search engines can see a recent save date, otherwise newer Web sites may get the upper hand. We suggest running a search engine report at least monthly to make sure the site hasn't slipped.

Understanding Search Engines & Directories

Directory vs. Engine

Search directories are human reviewed. An editor looks at your site, then decides whether to allow it into the directory. Directories display their listings first (often alphabetically), followed by supplemental listings from partner search engines. Most directories (such as Yahoo and Looksmart) charge for submissions and review sites quickly. The exception is DMOZ - The Open Directory Project. Submissions are free, but response can be slow and acceptance is not guaranteed. Multiple submissions may be required before a site is accepted, but it's worth the effort. DMOZ listings are shared with partner engines America Online, Alta Vista, Hotbot, Google, Lycos and Netscape.

Search engines use algorithms to automatically analyze, accept (or refuse) and rank your site. These algorithms look at a number of factors which can change without notice. "Spamming" techniques (such as doorway pages, tone-on-tone words that blend into the background, and long keyword lists at the bottom of a page) that artificially inflate site rank are discouraged and these sites are usually banned once they're discovered.

Pay-Per-Click Programs

Sponsored Listings (Pay-per-click) are pay-for-performance programs that offer a fast, effective way to drive targeted visitors to your Web site. Sponsored listings are shown above the free listings. These programs are keyword driven and appear online within hours or days of submission (as opposed to free listings which can take eight weeks to show online). We can assist with any part of pay-per-click marketing, including setting up the account, writing the ad, developing the keyword list, monitoring the program (as competitor movement can change daily) and making adjustments as needed along the way. Daily budgets can be set to ensure that you only receive as many clicks as you can afford.

  • Yahoo Search Marketing (formerly Overture) supplies listings to Yahoo, Alta Vista and MSN. Keyword price is the only factor in placement, so if you're the highest bidder, you win the top spot.

  • Google Adwords supplies listings to Google, Lycos, America Online, Teoma and Ask Jeeves. Rank is a combination of bid price and ad popularity (click-through rate). The more you are willing to pay and the more often people click on your ad(s), the higher you will rank.

  • Looksmart - offers two paid programs. Results show on their Web site, plus Lycos and smaller partner sites.

    • Inclusion-targeted Listings - Placement is determined by your relevancy, which can be improved by search engine optimization. You pay 15 cents (a flat rate) whenever someone clicks on your ad.

    • Keyword-targeted Listings - Placement is determined by keyword bid and ad popularity (click-through-rate).

Pay-Per-Click Success Stories

CadillacMerchandise.com: We designed an e-Commerce Web site and launched it over Thanksgiving 2004. To quickly start driving traffic to their site, we set up a Google and Overture pay-per-click campaign. Immediately, their site got about 50-100 visitors a day. They maintained this level of activity through the season and finished the season with over 100 orders. Orders continue to flow into the site daily.

SFMusiclaw.com: We designed a Web site to promote legal services for a San Francisco lawyer. As soon as we launched her Google adwords campaign, the phone started to ring! She got one strong business lead every day for two weeks, then paused her campaign.

FREE Search Engine Success Stories

While search engines do not guarantee free placements, we have successfully put numerous clients into top positions in the major free search engines!

Clutter Tamer: After eight weeks, we checked out one keyword, "broward professional organizer." For this keyword, their Web site ranks #2 on Yahoo (out of 36,300 sites), #1 in Alta Vista (out of 34,800 sites), and #2 on All the Web (out of 29,900 sites).

Lok-Lok, Inc.: Our six-week follow-up revealed that Lok-Lok placed on page 1 and 2, often as the first or second listing, for several of their search terms in Yahoo's free search engine!

Comfort Solutions: Within five weeks of optimizing and submitting their site to the free search engines and directories, Comfort Solutions reported their first sale from a customer who found their site through a Web search. This sale "totally covered our marketing expense," said a delighted Steve Ross, president of Comfort Solutions. Our search engine report revealed several top rankings in the major engines, including the top spot (#1) on Google, Yahoo Web, AOL and Teoma. Eleven of the search terms we associated with their site resulted in listings on pages 1-2 on several major search engines!

Fit For You: After the site was launched, we optimized the site and submitted it to the major free search engines and directories. We were delighted with the results! Not only was it accepted by All the Web, America Online, Excite, Hotbot, Looksmart/Inktomi, Lycos, MSN, DMOZ and Yahoo, it appears on page one of results numerous times for keywords such as "Broward exercise classes","Palm Beach exercise classes", "Barbara Colby" and "Fit For You". As a result, Fit For You has reported new students who found their Web site through an online search!

Jefco Manufacturing: The follow-up report revealed that for 15 major search engines and 22 keywords/keyword phrases, their site appeared in the first position (page 1, first listing) 42 times! Additionally, they have 197 appearances on page 1 of results and 221 showings on pages 2-10. Altogether, they have 460 free listings!

All Seasons Uniforms and Textiles: After optimizing and submitting to the free search engines/directories, All Season's site appeared in All the Web, America Online, Altavista, Google, Goto, Hotbot, Lycos, MSN, Northern Light and Yahoo. On nearly all of these engines, their site appeared on pages 1-6 of search results for various keywords. The client reported a 400% increase in Web traffic as a result of our work!

Hosted by Crystal TechWe will provide free Web hosting for any small, brochure-style Web site that we create. If you want a domain name, we would set it up to "forward" to your site at www.ronkin.net and keep your address in the window. You cannot access to modify your Web site with this option; however, we will be happy to update your site whenever you want. Upon request, we will move your site to the Web hosting provider of your choice or put it on disk for you.

We use and recommend Crystal Tech for Web hosting. They are a national Web hosting company based in Phoenix, Arizona. Basic accounts start at $7.95/month. Payment Options

We are available on a per-hour, per-project and retainer basis. We accept payment by cash, check, money order, write transfer and credit card (via Pay Pal). Work may begin after a retainer payment is made. Depending on the size of the project and the payment terms, we will either invoice at regular intervals (such as at the mid-point and upon completion), monthly, or at our discretion. In our "pay-as-you-go" program, we welcome pre-payments in any amount you can afford, and we will work against that balance until your account needs to be replenished. We can continue in this way and at your pace until the desired work is completed.

You are entitled to prompt and courteous service. Also, we want your project to reflect your personality and style. That is why we encourage your participation and involvement in the project. Your site will be created online at a private address where you can observe the daily progress. You may share this address with friends, family and associates. Print work will be sent as PDF proofs. Other projects, such as logos and CD-ROM presentations, may be reviewed online or other media. We understand that staying within your budget is important.
