Leah's Play Group

8/28/02 - Leah is delighted to be in a play group with all of her friends! Once a week, we take turns hosting a play group at our homes. This week, we went to Andrea's (and Donovan's) place. We played for a while and ate some yummy snacks.

9/2/02 - Leah has another tooth coming in! This makes a total of six so far, including the two front teeth, the two bottom teeth, and the top two incisors.

Leah's First Music Class

9/11/02 - Leah is 11 months old now (wow, almost a year!) Today, we started our first music class (which uses the Music Together teaching method). Unfortunately, Leah awoke at 5:30 this morning, so she was asleep in my arms when we arrived for the 10 AM class. Once she noticed all of her friends were there (Erin, Morgan, Donovan, Caitlyn, Samantha, Leah, Stephanie and Blake), she quickly perked up and got interested in the activities. While most babies enjoyed playing instruments (bells, tambourines, shakers, triangles and more), Leah preferred to put everything in her mouth. We were all impressed when Leah started burbling and humming in tune with the music!

Leah tastes a triangle and shakes a bell while her friends Donovan (with mom Andrea) and Caitlyn (with mom Nancy) play nearby.

9/12/02 - Yesterday afternoon, leah developed her second fever. It breaks our hearts to see her this way! Besides the warmth, crankiness, and 5 a.m. wake-ups, Leah has no other symptoms. Based on this information, the pediatrician's nurse advised us to wait it out. She said most fevers are just viruses that resolve themselves within 72 hours. I told her I was concerned that Leah's temperature shoots up every four hours when the Tylenol wears off. She said the fever would stay down longer if we switched to Advil or Motrin, which I'll try. If Leah still has a fever tomorrow morning, the nurse said we should bring her in.

Leah with Roseola Rash

9/14/02 - Health update: Yesterday morning we awoke and Leah was still burning up at 102.7 degrees. I called the pediatrician for an immediate appointment and cancelled our play group. The doctor confirmed her high temperature and looked in her ears and throat. Other than a lot of earwax and a slight redness and mucous in her throat, he said she had no "real" symptoms. They drew blood for more information and within five minutes ruled out a bacterial infection (white cells were normal). The doctor was slightly concerned about a low hemoglobin (indicating anemia), but said the illness could have caused it. He said he'll check it again at her annual visit next month, and may prescribe vitamins if it is still low. The doctor said this illness might be Roseola, a contagious virus marked by 3-7 days of high fever without symptoms. It concludes with a return to normal temperature and a rash. One of the girls in Leah's playgroup recently had it, so it's possible. This morning, Leah is doing much better. She slept in until 8 a.m. and has been in good spirits. She does not feel too warm. Hopefully this means she's getting better.

9/15/02 - Yep! Leah has Roseola. Today, she is covered in a "slightly raised, spotty pink rash" from her cheeks down to her toes. Our resources tell us that the rash will fade in 1-3 days. We do not need to worry about catching Roseola ourselves since this virus limits itself to children under three.

9/16/02 - Leah has been extra cranky since the rash broke out yesterday, but we were delighted to see her appetite returned with dinner. Also, her rash seems lighter, so hopefully she'll be better within the next day or two.

9/18/02 - Leah is all better now. Hooray!
